New Noveta is an artist duo of performers (Keira Fox and Ellen Freed) from the U.K. and Sweden who met in London in 2010. At the core of their kinetic, discomfiting live actions is often a physical task, the objective of which is not obvious. The two proceed to attempt the task before audiences, most recently in an exhibition or gallery setting. Most of their performative work is based around societal, political, social and emotional interaction that takes an abstract form during their performance usually rich in costumes. New Noveta seeks to confront how public displays of anxiety, both as a symptom and as a vessel of control, are often perceived negatively. Eschewing catharsis, the performances nonetheless stage a universally applicable feeling of despair that today’s control society attempts to hide or suppress. The photo-collages are often made during the performance when one documents the other and vice versa, and the two images are glued together in postproduction.
