What does a European typically associate with the country Iraq or Kurdistan? The war with the Islamic State, a humanitarian crisis, refugee camps, militia – this is what is presented by the mainstream media. Nowadays, few can imagine that what is Iraq today was once the ancient Mesopotamia, the cradle of civilization; that during the 1980s, daily life in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq was quite similar to that in the Czechoslovakia.
The Over My Eyes exhibition presents contemporary Iraq through the eyes of a young generation of documentary photographers who take the visitors on a visual journey through their homeland - the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
With unprecedented access and knowledge of the local environment, the photographers can offer a unique perspective of a region, which is currently facing one of the worst humanitarian catastrophes in modern history. Nevertheless, their subject matter is not just the war, but rather a life that goes on despite the war.
