On the back side of Untitled by Jiří Kovanda

These works from Jiří Kovanda (b. 1953) celebrate the act of free creation. Kovanda emerges into the spontaneous development of ideas while using his long term experience as an artist. Three of these collages came from a bigger collection of similar pieces. In these works, Kovanda uses trash material for composing a new image on the background of the invitation material from his exhibition in Ostrava (2016). Digging even deeper into the play with image reproduction, the wardrobe depicted on all invitations is a photograph from the flat that the artist used during his stay in Berlin. Kovanda used the Berlin apartment together with its furnishing as a field for experiments, little artistic interventions and installations, which refer to his artistic practice as a performer (ongoing since 1970). Therefore, all collages have a strong autobiographical as well as a childlike approach, which only deeper masks the conceptual thinking around reproducibility and reusing waste for something very precious.
